Getting Around
Well, having a car is the obvious choice (duh!). Just be prepared to search for parking or pay for a lot in the center city area. Although it does not ensure instant (parking) gratification, a much cheaper option than getting a monthly space is a residential parking permit (only for residents of particular parts of the city) Keep in mind the $1 parking after 5:00pm every Wednesday at Philadelphia Parking Authority lots.
If you don't have a car or a bike in this town, your choices are limited to Septa (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) & cabs. Septa offers two basic downtown train lines, a few trolleys, buses, and a host of regional rails. If you buy tokens ahead of time, it makes for a smoother and cheaper ride. Cabs are not too expensive if you use them sparingly, but just like eating out, can add up fast.
Another cool choice, especially for regional trips or errands that end with you carrying many large packages, is Philly Car Share. This non-profit lets you "borrow" the car keys for a specified chunk of time. You only pay per hour and per mile. Insurance and gas included. The amount of convenience varies with what neighborhood you inhabit.
Getting out of the city every once in a while can be nice, and essential. During the summer, "down the shore" is a popular option-and it generally means the Jersey shore, although a few in Philly are Delaware beach folk. There are still buses to Atlantic City that will refund a chunk of your fare if you walk into the casino and cash in your voucher.
Then there is the trip to NYC. Taking the train through Amtrak is quick but very expensive! The cheapest way to get there is the bus from Chinatown-only $10 each way. There is also now Bolt Bus. These brand new buses have free wi-fi and are only $12 each way and run from 30th street station in Philly to 34th and 8th in NYC.
If you want to end up at Port Authority and not the Lower East Side, check out greyhound's $12 each way deals. There is also a bus that goes to DC for $14 each way. Check out Apex Bus (215-351-9167) or New Century Travel (215-627-2666).
